It simply had to happen! Yours truly won a weekend away through work and it turned out to fall on a Saturday when one of the most exciting games at the Meadow this season would take place!
I was surrounded in luxury at Castle Ashby in Northamptonshire, racing carts, driving tanks, herding ducks and shooting clay pigeons, but all that was really on my mind that Saturday afternoon was my beloved Shrewsbury Town FC! Luckily for me Skally provided me with updates from Gay Meadow as I caught up with the action via breaks in the activities throughout the afternoon. From what I have been told and read it was a good come back from Town with the driving force being David Edwards in midfield.
Now I’m one who hates to miss a game so after watching the Bluetones in Wolverhampton on Friday night I was looking forward to the trip to Wycombe and a possible away day upset! The trip to Wycombe’s ‘Adams Park’ as it was emblazoned, its actually not called that anymore as yet another football stadium falls to the mercy of advertising!, was fairly uneventful but on arriving at the ground we noticed that there was a ‘human’ table football game set up in the car park. This looked like some kind of fun day for the kids, it must have been as the bars were closed, but that did not stop us from taking a look. As we strolled over the latest game had kicked off with both the blue and red teams sporting a 1-2-3 formation. It was evident from the outset that the reds were the stronger team and there striker was banging them in, one or two were a bit wayward, one missing Skally’s head by a whisker and the other being collected by Town fan Dale Skitt!
Into the ground and it was like a re-run of the Darlington game, stewards out in force to calm down the Town fans who had sat ‘one row too far back’ I really wish these people would use a bit of common sense before charging in with there yellow jackets on! At one point I counted 12 stewards all staring at a few Town fans who had sat too far back. What happens when the away end is full god only knows!
The match itself frustrated me as we did not look any worse than our high flying hosts; we played the ball about well in midfield with Edwards and debutant Jamie McClen practically impressive and carving out balls behind Wycombe’s defence. We lacked ideas in more attacking areas and really did not look likely to score all afternoon. Stallard went off injured, Adaggio had one weak effort and the best chance was yet again blazed over by Colin McMenamin. This guy is our leading scorer but if he put away more of the easier chances that fall to him he could be looking towards twenty goals for the season.
Sadly in the end we lost a point due to two poor defensive errors, with first Ashton getting caught out of position for the first goal and then Heard taking too many touches to clear in the build up to their second. We can’t be too harsh on these two as they are still young lads and have been arguably the most consistent players in our team this season.
I must mention the great entertainment our hosts provided, before the game with some really upbeat music which got you in the spirit for the game, Skally was loving some of the classics and maybe Town should look at the Wycombe play list before our next fixture here at the Meadow, and also the penalty shoot out at half time! The little kids put their heart and sole into it but at one point facing the away end the lad kicked the ball and it never made the goal line! He had another go which the keeper saved but we still gave him a big Shrewsbury cheer which made his face light up, well done to all the Town fans cheering him on!
Anyway there is still all to play for as we enter the final few weeks of the season. We are not in danger of going down, unlike our ‘neighbours’ at Chester but there are a number of players playing for a contract for next season so it would be nice to chalk up a few victories along the way.
Enjoy the game,
Up the Town!
