Hello all and welcome to the Gay Meadow this evening for this exciting League Two clash. It is strange to think that this is our penultimate home game of the season and therefore my final programme article. The opening game back in August, here against Rochdale does not seem like over eight months ago, doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun?!
Tonight’s game is undoubtedly an important one for our visitors from Rushden & Diamonds as they attempt to win a relegation dogfight for the second season running. Whether or not tonight’s game holds similar importance for the hosts however, depends on how our result went at Grimsby on Saturday. As I am writing this before Saturday I do not know if our outside chance of grabbing the final play-off berth is still alive or not. If a) we won on Saturday, then the dream is still very much alive as we tonight attempt a fourth win in a row. If b) we drew on Saturday, then we achieved a good result at one of the top sides and tonight’s game is a great opportunity to continue our unbeaten run. Or if c) we lost on Saturday then our play-off dreams may be effectively dead but we can still reflect on a much improved season and look forward to next term.
I am writing this the day after our wonderful victory over the border at Wrexham. Well done to all of you who packed out the away end and made the atmosphere fantastic. I’m sure that GP and the players are very grateful for all our support which helped spur them on to a win that will live long in the memory of all of us who were there. It was a display full of passion and fight, something that I hope to see more of from our away performances in the future. The moment when the final whistle blew and Gary Peters came sprinting over to the away end punching the air with delight and applauding our support was very special indeed. It means such a lot as a fan to know that all of the money and passion you put into being a supporter is appreciated by the management team and the players. Well done to everyone who was involved yesterday.
The only disappointment for me was the rather poor home following at The Racecourse Ground. As we entered the ground shortly before 11.30 I was amazed to see that the three home sides of the ground were virtually deserted. The terraces did fill up a little over the next half an hour but the attendance was probably about 2,000 less than I had expected. Maybe the fixture just doesn’t mean quite as much to them as it does to us. Perhaps they will find it easier to get themselves up for next seasons matches against us on the back of our two victories this year! We have the opportunity to complete another famous double at Chester on the final day of the season. If that game is anything like yesterday’s then I for one, can’t wait!
There are now less than two months to go until England’s opening World Cup match against Paraguay in Germany and the excitement is really starting to build. The expectation as always is high for success and it has to be said that with so many world class players in our squad, this really could be the year that the team turns fantasy into reality and brings home the famous trophy. What a fantastic way it would be for Sven to make his final bow! The decision to select which of Shrewsbury’s fine drinking establishments will be my chosen venue for the England matches in the summer will be made very soon. Beer garden and large screen T.V. being the most important criteria!
What with the World Cup taking up a whole month of an already brief summer break, there is actually less than four weeks break between the end of the tournament and the first football league matches of next season, what a treat for us footy lovers, by my estimation, there will be only three Saturday’s of wondering what to do with ourselves! Assuming of course that Shrewsbury are still a League Two club next season, there should be lots of exciting matches to look forward to. As well as more derby games against Chester and Wrexham, it seems as though two more of our old rivals could be thrown into the mix in the form of Walsall and Hereford United. The Saddler’s have been struggling for form this year and now seem to have only an outside chance of avoiding the drop from League One. Meanwhile, ‘The Bulls’ from Hereford have continued their usual steady form and look set to once again claim a play-off place in the Conference. You would have to assume that sooner or later Graham Turner’s side are going finally make a success of the play-offs after going so close for many years.
Whatever may happen, good luck to Shrewsbury Town as they close out the season. Good luck to Sven and the England team in Germany, and I look forward to writing my next article in August. Have a fantastic summer everybody.
Keep the faith!
