Welcome back to the Meadow for what we expect to be the final game here this season. Last week’s defeat at lowly Stockport all but put paid to our slim play-off chances, but credit must go to the manager and players for giving us the chance to talk about them and not playing the remaining games of the season looking nervously over our shoulders like years gone by.
It has to go down as a good season for us, we consolidated from last year, blooded a lot of young players into regular first team action and will finish mid table which is exactly where the manager predicted we would. I feel we have the beginnings of something special here, a top manager, a classy coach, a solid defence, effective midfield, we just need to add a week in week out goal scorer to our team and we could become a regular fixture in the top 7 next season. I’m certainly not going to predict that we will win the league but there are certainly exciting times ahead for this club.
Looking back over the season there have been many special moments some of which I will share with you.
Favourite away games: The best has to be Wrexham for the performance and victory over the old enemy, but for comedy value chanting 8-0 to the bin whilst getting a canning at Mansfield was pretty amusing; also standing in the pouring rain at Carlisle was made worthwhile by the Town performance and the hot kitty that stood next to us!
Worst away games: Without a doubt this has to be Barnet. From standing enjoying yourself in the pub with a pint to waiting outside the ground to get in, then queuing for the whole of the first half for free food and only getting a lukewarm coffee was a complete joke!
As always it’s been a pleasure to meet new Town fans along the way, many of which I have made at away trips and during my first season standing on the Wakeman End. Special mention must go to ‘ginger guy’ who never seems to face the pitch! And Mr Handlebar Tash who’s comments has brightened up many a dull first half!
Traditionally the last home game of the season sees the usual clamour for shirts, shorts, well basically anything the players are wearing and I’m sure today will be no different! Last year I managed to grab Luke Rodgers sock as he threw it up from the tunnel. This year I’m going for Hoggy’s neck or Hursty’s high heels! No seriously myself and Skally are in the sponsors lounge with Chris Smith and the away supporters today so be sure to give us a wave!
Finally I would like to thank you all for the support of the programme over the season, I know that myself and Skally both enjoy putting pen to paper and it really is great to hear your views on our thoughts. Also with the programme this season gaining rave reviews with this league it really is great to be apart of it.
On the fanzine front we have not managed to put out an issue this season, over recent weeks I have been putting the finishing touches to the new website which will launch in the next few days. This will be the basis for the fanzine as with work it is getting increasingly difficult to put a printed edition together. I’m not saying it’s the end for the printed version of TMS as I never say never, but we are more than happy to leave you with the new B&A fanzine and they have our full support.
Be sure to check out the new site at www.themightyshrew.co.uk.
Well that’s it for another season, have a fantastic summer and hopefully England can bring back the World Cup!
Enjoy the game,
Up the Town!
