Good evening and welcome to tonight’s fixture against local rivals and high flyers Walsall. After Saturday’s performance this will be another big test for us against the ‘bigger’ boys in the division and one where somewhat of a local ‘derby’ still exists. I remember the last fixture against the Saddlers, Batfink had just had an interview and met the players in the team hotel before driving to the Biscuit tin to meet up with Skally and myself for a pre-match pint! Now they have a supporters bar to be proud of, complete with club crest in the carpet design and something that could be incorporated into our new ground.
As we walked into the ground at Stockport I could not contain my delight at the news from the public address system that Chris Mackenzie was going to be starting in goal for us. The sight of one half of the TMS twins doing a little celebration jig was quite a sight for the rest of the following away support, most of whom did not know why I was so delighted!
As we settled into our seats by some of the b&a crew and the lovely Drayton Shrew the pressure was clearly on me for Macca to perform. Perform he certainly did, a commanding performance on a great night for the Town with Andy Cooke notching up his 3rd hat-trick at senior level and becoming the first Town player to crack in three in a match since Ryan Lowe. Town seemed so composed in possession against Stockport and likely to score on each time we broke forward. It really was a fantastic evening and set up the long trip to Hartlepool four days later.
Defeat on our last trip to Hartlepool left us almost down and out of the Football League so they were not too many fond memories as we made the long journey to the ‘home of the boiled burger’. Interestingly on the coach we were joined by a Pools fan whose beard soon became the focal talking point. He was pleasant enough and put up with all the banter that was thrown at it from Snooker Ref et al!
Before the match we had a quick tour of a ship that the Pools fan told us had been purchased and restored by the heritage museum they was also another old boat, a coach and a railway sleeper – all very exciting stuff!
As for the game itself Town played well during the first 10 minutes or so and went in front via an own goal. After the ball had crossed the line I was confused for a moment or two as to what the referee had given. The linesman was stood with his flag pointing at the corner flag, the ref was running towards the half way line and the home keeper was claiming a goal kick! The officials were a joke pretty much throughout the game and for those of you who made the trip I bet you are still trying to work out why Ashton was penalised for nearly having his own head taken off!
Although we won the game 3-0 in the end there were times when the home side absolutely battered us and at one point I thought we would be lucky to come away with a draw. Once again Macca in the Town goal was superb and there was talk of the TMS twins having number 21 printed on the away top, however we soon realised that after trying to get a shirt printed already this season without any success it was better to put the idea to bed!
So at the time of writing Town stand 8th in the division and on 14 points, hopefully that will have increased after Saturday’s fixture and we can really start to kick on in this division.
Enjoy the game,
Up the Town!
